Cedar Closet is built so that your closet never leaves your device.
Everything the app creates — your garments, photographs, body measurements, sizes, looks, loan records, and notes — is stored only on your device, in the app's local database. Photographs are stored on the device alongside the rest of your closet.
Cedar Closet declares three permissions and no others:
Cedar Closet does not request location, microphone, contacts, health, or notification access.
When you share a closet, Cedar Closet produces a file that you send yourself, through whatever means you choose. There is no intermediary service, no upload, and no link that anyone else can open. Nothing is shared unless you explicitly export and send it.
The garments in that file — their photographs, names, sizes, notes and measurements — are encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM, using a key derived from the passphrase you set. They cannot be read without it.
For the receiving copy of Cedar to recognize the file before you type the passphrase, a small header at the front of it is left unencrypted. That header contains the display name you chose for yourself, the date the file was made, the app version, the kind of file it is, and — for a shared closet — the name you gave that closet and how many items are in it. It contains no photographs, no measurements and no garment details. Treat the file the way you would treat any other file you send someone: anyone holding it can read that much.
Cedar Closet can write a backup file containing everything in the app, including your body measurements and any Look Preview reference photographs. It is encrypted with the passphrase you choose, and it is written wherever you tell the system to put it. If you place it in iCloud Drive or another service, that copy is governed by that service's terms, not by us. Your regular device backup may also include Cedar Closet's data, handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy.
Cedar Closet is free. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, and no feature is locked, gated, or reserved for a paid tier. The only limits in the app are safety limits on how large a shared or backup file can be, so that a malformed file cannot exhaust your device's memory. Your own closet has no item limit.
Cedar Closet makes no network request for your data. The app's own program files are loaded the way any app or web page loads its own files: inside the iOS app they are read from the local bundle, so nothing leaves the phone, and the app works with no connection at all.
If you use Cedar Closet through a web browser instead, those same requests for the app's own files reach whichever server is hosting it. They carry no closet data and no photographs, but — as with visiting any website — they do reveal your IP address and browser user-agent to that host.
Cedar Closet is distributed through the App Store. We may see anonymized, aggregate crash reports and sales figures through Apple's App Store Connect, and Apple handles that data under Apple's own privacy policy. None of it contains your closet, your photographs, or your measurements, and none of it identifies you to us.
Cedar Closet does not collect data from anyone, including children.
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this page with a new effective date.
